Community Action
There are a lot of misconceptions about life in the favelas. In a city of six million inhabitants, a third of the population of Rio resides in a "favela."
A core goal of our social project is to highlight the lives of the people who live and work in the favelas, and to give them opportunities for economic growth and social acceptance.
When people hear the word favela, the first things that many people think of are crime and violence. These problems overshadow the fact that over two million people live in the favelas in Rio, and the overwhelming majority of the people there are hard-working and law abiding, and are quick to make friends for life (especially if you speak a little Portuguese).
Our main house in the Leme Favela is located directly above Copacabana beach, and has views of the ocean. Our host families are amazing, hard working people, who are eager to have people into their homes and to help share the experience of living and training in Rio.
Favela Fight is a joint venture founded by a martial artist from NYC who had the pleasure of training and living in the Leme Favela, and the people he met there. A generous amount of your tuition is used to provide various social services to the people in the favela, including free martial arts lessons and education initiatives for underprivileged children. We are happy to employ many members of the community, and we are looking forward to continued growth and success, so we can assist many more.
We are also looking forward to sponsoring fighters in the near future.
